Hello nerds!

Jordan Peele is rebooting both The Twilight Zone and Candyman, and we’ve got some casting news for the latter that’s pretty super. Super-villain that is.

According to Variety, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, aka Aquaman’s Manta, is close to signing on to play the hook-handed, vengeful spirit in the reboot of Candyman from producer Jordan Peele (who is writing the script), and director Nia DaCosta. The report also gives a bit of a synopsis for the reboot of the 1992 horror classic from Bernard Rose, and Clive Barker, starring Tony Todd, and Virginia Madsen.

If you’ve seen the original film, you know this reboot needs someone vastly talented to carry the hook for the brilliant Tony Todd from the original films. And for those who have seen Aquaman, Abdul-Mateen is just the guy to do it.

He made Manta far too cool to be a villain, since he was more like Iron Man out for blood in the film. I get the sense he’ll be portrayed as more of an anti-hero than all-out baddie in future Aquaman movies and that’s largely due to Abdul-Mateen’s charismatic performance and superhero physique.

So, between this casting news and Peele’s deep involvement, the reboot is terribly intriguing. Candyman will be a bit of a reunion for Abdul-Mateen and Peele, as this is the second project they will have worked on together. For those unaware, Abdul-Mateen is also in the upcoming and utterly terrifying looking Us, written and directed by Jordan Peele.

All in all, I think we’re in for a real treat. Albeit a scary one that’s bound to make me avoid mirrors for a while, much like its predecessor.
