Classic Carpenter. The Horror Icon Shares His Thoughts On Big Trouble In Little China 2

Hello nerds!

For those unaware, Dwayne Johnson going to be joining the wonderfully weird universe horror icon John Carpenter built in 1986’s Big Trouble in Little China. Thankfully, The Rock's Big Trouble In Little China movie is not a reboot, and will be a sequel to Carpenter’s cult classic. Well, the legendary director has finally shared his thoughts on the project and it goes without saying, he is not amused.

In a chat with Cinema Blend, Carpenter addressed the forthcoming sequel to Big Trouble in Little China, and the lovable curmudgeon delivered the precise kind of answer you’re expecting. And likely hoping for.

Always do you, sir. Always. While Carpenter’s feelings could be construed as “salty”, they also happen to be fairly on point. Look, I really like most of The Rock’s movies I’ve seen, but the formula to his success has been abundantly clear for some time now; failing franchise + The Rock = a shit ton of $.

Arguably, The Rock can breathe new life into a franchise better than anyone, but he can’t launch one. Almost every solo franchise he’s tried to launch has flopped, epically. So, it’s getting a bit old seeing the People’s Champ try and jump start a franchise. And do we really want that to happen again? Especially, when the film franchise in question is the truly classic Big Trouble in Little China; one of Carpenter’s best and most beloved films. So, you can see where he’s coming from.

Granted, the director hasn’t cared for any sequel or reboot of his films, outside of the pants-shittingly scary looking Halloween 2018 from Danny McBride & David Gordon Green, but that doesn’t mean he’s wrong about this one. Big Trouble in little China is perfect the way it is.

Having said that, a live-action sequel to the original would’ve been dope, but the story not picking up at the exact moment the first film ended would be a disservice to the film and fans alike. So, I’ll gladly settle for being able to see the continued adventures of one Jack Burton in comic book form.
