From Houston To Hathaway! There's A New Grand High Witch In Town
Hello nerds!
Over the summer, it was revealed that Robert Zemeckis would write and direct a reboot of Jim Henson’s The Witches. Well, we’ve officially have a casting announcement as Anne Hathaway will star in the film.
According to Variety, Hathaway has signed on to play the Grand High Witch in the second film to adapt the Roald Dahl classic. In the 1991 version, the great Anjelica Huston starred as the Grand High Witch, who leads a coven of other horrible witches; obvs. And they’ve cooked up a plan to turn every child in the world into a mouse, thereby making them easier to kill. Well, one plucky young child and his grandmother suddenly find themselves right in the middle of the action and must try and defeat the witches and save the world.
As you’d expect being a Jim Henson film, the 1990 movie was slathered in charm and thanks to incredible puppetry and makeup FX, it stands as a vastly underrated classic. Not to mention, the film co-stars Rowan Atkinson, whom is as near comedy-perfection as it can get. So, the remake has got some fairly sizable shoes to fill. However, if there’s a director out there who can bring the whimsy, it’s Robert Zemeckis. Plus, nabbing a star as talented as Hathway doesn’t hurt either. My only hope is they stick to practical FX and avoid going all-CGI, but time will tell.
And Please, let them manage a cameo for Anjelica Huston and Rowan Atkinson. I quite like the notion of Huston playing the grandmother this time around and being one of the heroes of the tale.
