He's Bad In DC, So Why Not Marvel? Jared Leto Is Morbius The Living Vampire

Hello nerds!

Jared Leto has signed on to star as Dr. Michael Morbius, a.k.a. Morbius the Living Vampire, in Sony's upcoming Spider-Man spinoff of the same name. For those who don't read the comics, Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who accidentally turns himself into a non-supernatural vampire after trying to cure his own rare blood disease.

Jared Leto has seemingly confirmed his involvement with Morbius on Twitter. So, I guess this is happening.

Morbius is the latest Sony-owned Marvel character to join the Spider-Verse alongside Tom Hardy's Venom, and Black Cat & Silver Sable from their forthcoming movie. Yay?

Daniel Espinosa is set to direct the big screen debut of Jared Leto in the MCU-adjacent the Sony Spider-Verse. The script was written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, the duo responsible for such "classic" films as the latest Power Rangers movie, Gods of Egypt and Dracula Untold. Avi Arad will producing with Lucas Foster and Palak Patel will oversee the project for Sony. Note, those last 3 guys have been involved with such projects as Oz the Great and Powerful, Jumper and Fantastic Four. Quite the list of "accomplishments", I know.

It's clear Sony is just trying to churn out a film for any and all Marvel properties they own, in order to cash in on the success of the MCU, which I understand. They're in the business of making movies. However, it'd be nice if they made some good ones once in awhile, other than the ones that Marvel "makes" for them. And to those who might be thinking taking on another lead role in a comic book film means Leto is too busy to play the Joker, think again.

Fans of the DC "Prime" Universe, where Leto serves as the Clown Prince of Crime, can rest assured this venture into "Marvel" waters, won't take away from his time as Batman's greatest villain. Leto is still set to star in both the a standalone film and the Harley Quinn-centric, Gotham City Sirens. We just can't seem to get rid of this guy.

Morbius is likely to begin production sometime this year, which could mean a 2019 release.
