Lights. Camera. Danvers! Captain Marvel Is Officially In Production
Hello nerds!
If the rumors are true, we won't meet Carol Danvers until Avengers 4, but at least we can bask in the glow of news about her solo outing. Besides being set in the 90s and featuring the freaking Kree-Skrull War, Captain Marvel also marks the return of a beloved member of the MCU back to the big screen and features another surprise or two.
With principal photography beginning a few days ago, Marvel has officially announced the start of production of Captain Marvel starring Academy Award-winner Brie Larson. As fantastic as this news is on its own, the announcement reveals some new faces are being added to the cast. Some really talented and familiar faces.
Specifically, Academy Award-nominee Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace and Clark Gregg aka Phillip J. Coulson, Agent of motherfucking S.H.I.E.L.D.! Probably. There's no official confirmation these gentlemen will be reprising their respective roles as Korath the Pursuer, Ronan the Accuser and The Son of Coul, but one would assume given the events of the movie and the timing, they won't be playing different characters.
An official synopsis was also included in the announcement and it confirms everything about the film we basically already knew. The film is set in the '90s and focuses on an interstellar war between two alien races and the humans that get caught in the middle.
I cannot wait to see Captain Marvel in the MCU, but I've still got $5 that says we first see Carol Danvers in one of the post-credits scenes of Avengers: Infinity War. Regardless, my hype for this movie is real. And for good fucking reason. Several reasons, actually.
All in all, there really is no better candidate for Marvel's first female-lead movie other than Captain Marvel. Especially, given the rich history of stories she brings with her; the further exploration of the Kree, in particular, is vastly overdue. The introduction of Captain Marvel, and the Skrulls, is something I've been waiting for ever since Nick Fury first recruited Tony Stark, though I dared not dream for it. This portion of the cosmic MCU is one I adore, above almost any other. So, only adding to the rich tapestry that is the cosmic MCU with one of Marvel's most powerful superheroes is fucking spectacular.
One can speculate to their heart's content about what the next "phase" of films will be, but my guess is after the events of Avengers 4, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will deal with Secret Wars over the course of 10 or so films. So if that's the case, we're going to see some truly whacky shit and I'm all for it.
Captain Marvel flies into cinemas on March 8, 2019 and she'll return shortly thereafter in Avengers 4 on May 3, 2019.
