Hello nerds!

In a bit of surprising news that still has me smiling from ear to ear, it has been announced that a Karate Kid series is in development and it will star the two combatants of the 1984 All-Valley Under 18 Karate Championship, Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso. Yes my friends, William Zabka and Ralph Macchio will reprise their respective characters in the revival of the beloved 80s movies.

Per a report from Rolling Stone, the show will be called "Cobra Kai" and the 10-episode comedy, yes comedy, and it catches us up with the current goings on in the lives of Cobra Kai's most dangerous pupil, Johnny Lawrence and "The Kid" himself, Daniel LaRusso. From the synopsis listed, it would seem the years haven't been as kind to the flaxon-haired bad boy as they were to the pride of Reseda. 

As I'm sure you can picture, being one who frequently suffered the wrath of the bully, I really like the notion that the gold standard of 80s bully asshole is down on his luck. Karate Kid stands as a true classic 80s nerd-revenge movie, and much like the greatest film of that genre, Revenge of the Nerds, it follows a simple format. Nerd gets bullied, realizes the power they possess and then they dominate the fuck out of whomever dare stands in their way.

The report also mentions that Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg will co-write and direct the majority of the series. The duo also split duties on American Reunion and Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. I know. It made me cringe too. However, the pair did also write the script for Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle so there's a glimmer of hope, even if a lot of you won't see the show because it'll be on Youtube Red. 

Admittedly, I don't know a single person who has Youtube Red, myself included, so who writes and directs the show might be moot. At any rate, we can hope the series ends up being more Karate Kid meets Jean-Claude Van Johnson than American Reunion with Crane kicks.
