Dead Or Alive, We're Getting A Sequel. Robocop Is Back!
Hello nerds!
The baddest cyborg to patrol the streets of Detroit is set to return. Yes friends, we’re getting a new RoboCop movie, but this time it’ll be done properly.
For those unfamiliar, 1987’s RoboCop told the story of police officer Alex Murphy, who after being brutally gunned down in the line of duty, is transformed into a mandroid cop. It’s every bit as great as you’re thinking, and if you haven’t seen it, give it a chance. Besides, for continuity’s sake, you should.
Per a report from THR, Abe Forsythe will direct the next installment to franchise with RoboCop Returns. And surprisingly, in a very Halloween 2018 maneuver, this newest movie is a sequel to the 1987 original, directed by Paul Verhoeven. So, the films RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3 no longer exist. Which is fine; they can join the 2014 debacle starring Joel Kinnaman in the Bog of Eternal Stench.
Forsythe directed the zombie-comedy starring Lupita Nyong’o, Little Monsters. It was fantastic. Little Monsters featured a lot of gore, comedy, and horror, and they were weaved together for a delightfully fun movie. And if you’ve seen the original RoboCop, you’re aware all of those elements were ever-present, and are a huge part of why the it’s a beloved cult classic.
So, given the involvement of the original writers and a capable director, the continuing adventures of Detroit’s cybernetic crimefighter seem to be in fairly good hands. Let’s hope the original RoboCop, Peter Weller, is somehow involved.
