It's Villains Vs A Kaiju Starfish In An All-New Trailer For James Gunn's The Suicide Squad

Hello nerds!

Everything we’ve seen from James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad makes it quite clear this movie will be a vast improvement over the 2016 original. And this latest trailer only serves to further cement that sentiment only further.

The new trailer reveals a bit more of the plot and shows the heart of the movie will be the relationship between Idris Elba‘s Bloodsport and his daughter. He’s “selected” for the Squad via Amanda Waller’s somewhat questionable methods, and agrees if it means his daughter is safe. Interestingly, the trailer also reveals the reason why he’s in prison; he put Superman in the ICU after shooting him with a Kryptonite bullet. The trailer also goes on to introduces us to a few members of the Squad that weren’t around the last time.

Plus, we get a far better look at the film’s villain, the giant, psychic, alien-starfish, Starro. Oddly enough, the trailer calls out the fact the film’s director, James Gunn, also directed the Guardians of the Galaxy. Yes, a DC movie shouted out a Marvel franchise in its trailer. We live in strange times.

The Suicide Squad starr(o)ing Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Alice Braga, Joaquín Cosio, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Nathan Fillion, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Jennifer Holland, Tinashe Kajese, and Sylvester Stallone hits theaters and HBO Max on July 16, 2021.

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
