Outstanding! The Rock's Big Trouble In Little China Movie Is Not A Reboot
Hello nerds!
Of all the 80s movies being rebooted these days, there should be a few which fall under the category of “Perfect As They Are”; Big Trouble in Little China being one of them.
The utterly epic fantasy/kung fu action movie follows the adventures of one Jack Burton, a wisdom spewing trucker, played brilliantly by Kurt Russell and the actual hero of the movie, his best friend Wang Chi played by Dennis Dun, as they go toe to toe against an immortal evil sorcerer named Lo Pan played by the amazing James Hong.
The movie itself sports some of the greatest action scenes of all-time, over the top visual FX and Kurt Russell at his comedic best. Plus, John Carpenter did the score as well and the theme song with accompany video he made for the film are the stuff of fucking legend.
Big Trouble in Little China is quite possibly one of my favorite movies from the 80s, which by default puts it on the list of my favorite movies ever. So, when news broke about The Rock rebooting it, I was a little perturbed. Happily, it turns while The Rock, Mr. Johnson if you’re nasty, is indeed still making a Big Trouble in Little China film, it’s actually a sequel of sorts.
While speaking to Collider, Hiram Garcia, president of production at Seven Bucks Productions, revealed the new Big Trouble in Little China film does place in the beautifully weird world John Carpenter built, but it focuses on an all-new character, as nobody could play Jack Burton other than Kurt Russell.
He’s abso-fucking-lutely 100% correct.
Phew. As much as I love the Rock and most of his movies I’ve seen, there’s nobody alive (or dead), whom can fill the titan-sized shoes of one Kurt Russell as Jack Burton. So, it would be foolish to even try.
Besides, as he’s proven to be time and time again, Dwayne Johnson is the person you bring in to revive a franchise. I’m all for him breathing new life into this franchise. I’ve been pining away for a sequel, not in comic book form, for decades now and you could hope for worse than The Rock to lead the charge.
Dwayne Johnson does action comedy better than anyone these days and him signing onto a movie you know what you’re getting. The movie will be light, fun, action heavy and will feature more than a few jokes. The more I think about it, The Rock just might be the perfect person for this franchise. Although, I’m curious if this film will get the blessing of Carpenter himself, like Halloween 2018 did.
Only time will tell, but I do know one thing we can look forward to is with The Rock playing a new character, the door is wide open for the return of the legend himself to the franchise.
Save us Jack Burton. You’re our only hope.
