The Budget For Amazon's Lord Of The Rings Series Is The Riches Of Erebor!
Hello nerds!
If budget is any indication, then it seems Amazon is serious as fuck about owning the next "Game Of Thrones", by way of their Lord of the Rings series. The untitled project is rumored to have a staggering budget of $500 Million over 2 seasons. Please allow me to remind you the insanely large budget of half a billion dollars is on top of the $250 million Amazon spent obtaining the rights in the first place. Holy shit!
For context, Game of Thrones eighth and final season has a budget of around $90 million. Oh, and Peter Jackson’s original trilogy cost $281 million when it came out, which when adjusted for inflation rings in around $395 million today. Yeah, this TV show is going to be fucking gargantuan.
Apparently, Amazon is hoping a return to the world of J.R.R. Tolkien will be enough to lure in new Prime members. The company has really been churning out original content, with shows like the amazing Jean-Claude Van Johnson and The Tick, so I've got no issues them bringing The Lord of the Rings to life as a series. On top of those shows, they've got a slew of well liked programs, and they seem to have a handle on what they're doing.
In fact, the only lingering question is exactly which story from LOTR the series will adapt? All we really know is the story will precede Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring". So, obviously I presume this means The Silmarillion. Right? Which could totally groove with the fact the delightful Sir Ian McKellen has every intention of playing Gandalf again.
Patience, Tolkien fans. Your wait is almost over.
